The EOPAA committee met in late February to review the EOPAA Native oils project species dossier and feedback received from members regarding this. Based on potential gross income and benefit potential through being included in the project, 10 species from 25 nominated species were selected and listed in Table 1 below.

Leptospermum petersonii (Lemon Scented Tea Tree Oil)
Mimosa dealbata (Mimosa absolute)
Backhousia citriodora (Lemon myrtle)
Melaleuca ericifolia (Rosalina)
Eremophila mitchellii (Desert Rosewood, Buddha)
Leptospermum scoparium (Manuka)
Kunzea ambigua (Tick Bush)
Melaleuca quinquenervia (Nerolina)
Eucalyptus staigeriana (Lemon ironbark)
Callitris intratropica (Northern Blue Cypress)

The aim of the emerging industries funding is to support research and development which will support the industry to produce an annual turnover exceeding 10 million. Based on estimated average gate prices and current and potential production volumes, the current value of the production of species listed above is 2.4 million pa and estimated growth within 5 years of completion of project (i.e. 2028) is 15.9 million.

Of the remaining 15 species, all were considered to have merit for inclusion but did not make the final 10 for the following reasons:

  • Have existing standards that support trade and will not benefit from inclusion in the project
  • Existing product with low demand
  • Existing standards, low domestic production
  • Limited commercial access
  • Point of difference lacking – product is too similar to cheaper existing products
  • Prohibitive production cost and price point
  • Too early – undeveloped
  • Too long for maturity

Members are asked to consider the selected list above and respond to the EOPAA committee and secretary with feedback. See copy of the Species Dossier by clicking on this link

The EOPAA committee has resolved to form a steering committee for the Australian Native Oils project to provide technical, logistical and strategic information and advice to support development and implementation of project objectives. It is agreed that the committee can be flexible in attendance number and appointment.  A number of members have already offered to join this committee and we welcome others who may want to be involved.
